One of These Days Feel the burn and take the pain Count every single drop of rain Paint a picture, floss your teeth Examine all that lies beneath Cross your heart and hope to die You’ll never know the reason why Make a sculpture, write a sonnet It will always eat at you won’t it? One of These Days, One of These Days I’m gonna let you know that One of These Days I’m gonna let you go Wash the car and change the oil Stop obsessing about that girl Do the laundry make the bed Move along or wind up dead One of These Days, One of These Days I’m gonna let you know that One of These Days I’m gonna let you go Then I picked up the phone to call you So I could let you have it ‘Cause that’s my favorite, familiar dysfunctional habit And you told me, “baby, I love you But let’s admit we’re through ‘Cause you’re lost out on the ocean And I never could get through to you” Skip a stone on a placid lake Fall down drunk at an irish wake Try to lose those memories Get yourself off of your knees Jump for joy and hit the roof Crack a smile, appear aloof Climb a mountain, scale the peak Act invincible when you feel weak One of These Days, One of These Days I’m gonna let you know that One of These Days I’m gonna let you go Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer ©℗Glen Ross Music

Save Myself 02:35
I’ll Save You When the sky is gray and there’s just no way I will hold your hand, it’ll be okay I’ll save you just as soon as I save myself I will make you laugh when he makes you cry I can tell you what but don’t aske me why Cruel is kind. Moral deprivation Ties that bind cut off circulation Mom and Dad’s constant confrontation These events require explanation I will be there, bro, that’s all you need to know Just take it slow, don’t bottle up and blow I will save you just as soon as I save myself Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer ©℗Glen Ross Music

Walk Away 04:01
Walk Away Dreaming of a future we were never gonna see Turing into something we didn’t want to be A blown out knee that kept us out of the game An injury and we’ll never be the same And it just keeps getting harder It just keeps getting harder every day But I can’t walk away From you Packing up the souvenirs and setting them up fire I don’t want to know, so I’m not gonna inquire You look so sad that I can’t feel good And I miss walking in our neighborhood And it just keeps getting harder It just keeps getting harder every day But I can’t walk away From you I look into the rearview and see the damage that I’ve done I can do an inventory of the bad times and the fun The tears we shed, perfecting the art Finding new inventive ways of tearing you apart And it just keeps getting harder It just keeps getting harder every day But I can’t walk away From you Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer and Bonnie Whitmore ©℗Glen Ross Music (ASCAP)/Boplicity Music SESAC

Both Sides 03:21
Both Sides I’ve been a bully, and I’ve been beaten down I’ve lived up in the clouds, and been deep underground I’ve hung out in heaven, and spend time in hell Was an angel sometimes, and the devil as well. I’ve been the Joker, and I’ve been the Ace Was the life of the party, got punched in the face I’ve yelled and I’ve hollered, and I’ve spoken with love Been down on my knees, and cursed God above I’ve been on both sides Every day of my life I’ve cost us the series, and hit game winning threes I’ve tasted the honey and been stung by the bees Been warm and attentive, obnoxious and mean, Sometimes a whisper and sometimes a scream I’ve been on both sides Every day of my life I’ve been a thief and a liar, and a saint sometimes, too. I was loving to her, and awful to you I’ve had bright sunny mornings, and a long nights of doubt Had no faith when I started, but I think things’ll work out I’ve been on both sides Every day of my life Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer ©℗Glen Ross Music

Desperately 03:11
I hide in the kitchen Can't find what I'm missing People are dead Dead to me I'm holding a shotgun Glad that I got one Nobody's gonna get to me Dreams that I'm holding Dreams that are golden Thinking of you and me Peacefully sleeping here Lost on the landing Missing you Missing you Desperately Missing you Desperately Talk to me will you Silences kill you We will emerge eventually Out of the darkness Feeling your sweetness Give me a chance I'll repent You'll see I didn't want this Buddy, I promise This was the only way Wait for me won't you I won't disappoint you Maybe someday you'll see I'm missing you Desperately Missing you Desperately Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer ©℗Glen Ross Music

Looking down at Deep Black Water Closer than you've ever been Thinking hard about your daughter Wondering if you can swim Sinking now just like a stone You feel it down inside your bones Light is nowhere in the darkness Fright the only thing you feel Joy inhabiting your heart less Pain you know is something real Pulls you under from below You want to but you can't let go Deep Black Water Music and Lyrics by Zak Schaffer ©℗Glen Ross Music

about

Even though my last record came out only two years ago, this record feels like it's been a long time in the making. After I Can’t Help Myself was done, I had a crazy idea to write an opera about my family. Unfortunately, although some of the songs were pretty good, the narrative wasn’t really strong enough to justify an entire album. But, I did keep a couple of those songs for this record and I have enjoyed playing them live.

Most of the songs on this record were written since I ended my marriage, pulled up stakes, and moved to Austin. The songs on this record have a lot to do with the last few years of my life. I'm not really one to make songs out of my journal entries, but sometimes you have to just get on with it and write that break-up album.

Actually, this record is more about the ups and downs of family than it is about a break up between two people. Hopefully, you'll listen to the lyrics and notice some pervading themes. Mom and Dad, leaving, trying to protect the ones you love as you watch things fall apart.

Although I did one day at a "real" studio, most of the record was recorded here at home and with some friends in LA sending tracks over the ol' internet. I'm really grateful for everyone involved. Having people play on something is a great motivator to put things out.

I had hoped to send the tracks to one of my gifted mixer friends, but in the end I buckled down, took my time and finished it here at home. I’m glad I did. While I’ve enjoyed the process of trusting people to do excellent work, on this one I was a little more hands on. It felt good. I felt like Prince for a minute. Although, now that I think of it, he usually left the mixing up to Susan Rogers.
